Architecture / walks
Explore the city through its buildings and the Conservancy’s current walking tours.
Current details ↗Collection highlights are starting points, not guarantees that every object is on display today. Check the museum’s on-view information and booking rules. LA’s museum geography is sprawling: downtown, Miracle Mile, the hills and the San Gabriel Valley are separate outings, not a single afternoon with a heroic parking budget.
Downtown / contemporary art
Yayoi Kusama’s Infinity Mirrored Room—The Souls of Millions of Light Years Away is a collection landmark. Read the museum’s separate reservation instructions for the room before assuming general admission covers it. Use the rest of the collection to follow artists and ideas; the queue should not become your whole relationship with art.
THE MOVE Pair downtown art with a Grand Avenue concert or a historic-core walk.
Official details ↗Brentwood / art and landscape
Van Gogh’s Irises is a collection highlight worth looking at slowly: individual flowers, thick paint and the rhythm of the leaves repay attention. The museum’s conservation research adds a second story about pigments and changing color. Leave time for architecture, garden and views instead of treating the painting as an errand.
THE MOVE Use the Getty visitor site for entry, parking and current gallery information.
Official details ↗Miracle Mile / collection and city landmark
Chris Burden’s Urban Light turns historic streetlamps into an outdoor installation and a very LA meeting point. Peter Zumthor’s David Geffen Galleries opened in 2026 as a new home for the permanent collection. Visit the collection inside as well as the lamps outside; architecture changes the museum experience, but it does not replace the art.
THE MOVE Check the current campus map and collection display, rather than relying on a pre-construction itinerary.
Official details ↗San Marino / art, books and gardens
Thomas Gainsborough’s The Blue Boy is one purposeful stop in a much larger estate of art, research collections and botanical gardens. Pick a garden and a gallery instead of attempting the entire site at sprint speed. San Marino is a regional excursion; allow a substantial part of the day for it.
Official details ↗Exposition Park / Black art and history
Give CAAM its own place in the city’s cultural map, not a parenthetical mention between larger institutions. Exhibitions, public programs and historical interpretation connect artists with the communities and histories around them. Read the current exhibition calendar before choosing a visit.
Official details ↗Boyle Heights / printmaking and community
Printmaking, artist development and community organizing meet here. The organization’s history reaches back to artists working from an East LA garage, and its workshops show cultural infrastructure in action. Consult current program locations: an arts organization is not necessarily a gallery you can enter unannounced.

The city’s culture is not confined to screens. Choose the room, the program and the neighborhood together; then leave enough time to arrive before the lights go down.
Grand Avenue / music and architecture
Frank Gehry’s exterior is the opening scene. A performance lets you experience the building as a listening space, not just an architectural object. The LA Phil calendar mixes orchestral programs, recitals, new music and other artists, so read the actual bill rather than assuming every night sounds alike.
Official details ↗Westwood / theater
The Gil Cates and Audrey Skirball Kenis theaters offer different scales of encounter. New writing, productions and workshop events belong in the same city as the film studios; seeing a play is an easy way to make an LA evening feel less like an itinerary. The calendar guide includes verified 2026 production dates.
Official details ↗Los Feliz / Hollywood / Santa Monica
Repertory screenings, filmmaker conversations and festivals make cinema a communal event. The Egyptian, Los Feliz 3 and Aero put programs in different neighborhoods; read the venue printed on the ticket. A movie followed by a local meal beats three unrelated destinations connected by traffic.

COMMUNITY VOICES
ONE Archives makes digitized audio of LGBTQ pioneers available through the USC Digital Library. The recordings include Harry Hay, Phyllis Lyon and Del Martin: organizing history with the speakers still audible, rather than reduced to a plaque. Listen first, then connect that history to the archive and the city around it.
